Wedding couple: Nora & Rob

I am pleased to introduce you to Nora & Rob, our couple for March 2022. This lovely couple reached out to us at the end of the year 2021. I remember how humble and shy they seemed at the beginning of our practices. At the time, they did not have an exact song or idea for their first dance. The moment I taught them a couple of basic steps, I knew they would be able to learn advanced, beautiful choreography.

In the wedding dance, I always make sure both the bride and groom are comfortable with the steps and movements. My job was easy with Nora and Rob. I showed them my ideas for lifts and dips and they tried them out. Usually, after the third try, it already looked amazing. Enjoy reading about how they prepared for their wedding.

When and where was your wedding day? Did you have to reschedule because of the pandemic?

Our wedding was on March 5th, 2022 at a resort (Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya) in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. We did reschedule a full year as a result of the pandemic. We were always planning to have our wedding down in Mexico and were willing to wait to have the wedding we dreamed of!

What was your first dance song? Did you choose your song before you started to practice your first dance choreography?

We danced to ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ by James Arthur. When we started our lessons, we did not have this song in mind. During one of our first lessons, we practiced to ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ and afterwards, we both agreed that this would be our song. We had heard it previously and been familiar with it, though we went back and loved the lyrics and also how it felt to dance to that song.

What was your idea about your first dance choreography/style - if you had any?

We had no clue!! We initially just wanted to look like we could move well together, haha! Once we got started, we loved the lessons and wanted to do something that was fully choreographed.

How many lessons did you take? Did you take in-person or online lessons?

We took 11 in-person lessons. We had initially only planned to do 5, as our initial goal was to just move well together without choreography. However, we (surprisingly) loved the lessons once we got started and realized that, with Katarina’s help, we were in fact capable of doing a more choreographed dance!

What was your experience with Be You Dance Studio?

We found Be You Dance Studio on the knot, and were sold after our initial meeting as Katarina was so professional, warm, and experienced. We looked forward to every lesson, which again, was a surprise as neither myself or my husband liked dancing prior to starting our lessons. Katarina was patient and clear as she taught us different steps, and made sure that we felt comfortable with the dance, steps, and choreography at every step of the way, while also pushing us out of our comfort zone when she knew we could do something (like a lift!).

Would you recommend other couples hire a dance teacher? Would you recommend Be You Dance Studio? Why?

YES! We absolutely would recommend hiring a dance teacher, and specifically recommend Be You Dance Studio. It was such a fun experience to have as a couple - learning something new and also something so meaningful for our wedding celebration. We couldn’t believe what we ended up being capable of, and it was a major highlight of our wedding preparation/planning, as well as of our special day!

What did your guests say about your first dance?

Our guests were absolutely shocked by our dance! They couldn’t believe we were able to move and dance the way we did. They were so impressed, and some even said it was the best first dance they’d ever seen!

Do you have any last words you would like to share with the couples who are preparing for their wedding/first dance choreography? Any advice?

Enjoy the process and have fun! My husband and I were, understandably, anxious at our last lessons and leading up to the actual moment of doing the dance. Right before, we did one last practice and noticed we were just so happy to share something that we learned together with our closest friends and family. We are beaming in all the photos and videos of our dance. It was so fun and memorable, we truly won’t forget the experience of doing the lessons and having our first dance!

We hope this interview can help you with your wedding preparation. If you are still hesitating to hire a dance teacher for your first dance, feel free to reach out to us and schedule a FREE 30-min zoom call where we can tell you more details and answer all of your questions.
