How to Choose The Best First Dance Song?

The first dance song is one of the most important musical selections of all the songs you'll hear on your wedding day. This moment occurs just after you enter the reception as newlyweds, so you'll need an exceptional song for your solo spin on the dance floor.

Some of the couples have their “special song” full of memories. BUT! Most of the couples don’t! If you are one of those couples, there’s no need to worry! We've compiled some tips on how to choose the very best first dance songs. You and your partner should have fun with this! Open a bottle of wine and enjoy the ride.

1. Choose a song that means something to you.

Many couples want to find a song that relates, in one way or another, to their relationship. If you have a song that brings you and your partner some nice memories (first kiss, first vacation, first apartment,...), even if it is not a typical wedding song. Stop right here and don’t hesitate! Don’t overthink it. You can’t go wrong with a song that is meaningful to you and your fiancé. If you don’t have it, just keep reading…

2. Who is it for?

Ask yourself, is the first dance for you and your partner or for entertaining the guests? Or maybe both? What I mean is, you can have very young guests but you prefer old school songs; or the opposite. Maybe you would like a very simple song with easy choreography, but you would like them to remember your first dance and you will choose a fun and rhythmic song…

3. Pick a style.

First, the important question is what style is your wedding? Is it modern or more classical?

For a modern wedding, you can choose songs from:

James Arthur - Say You Won’t Let Go

Adele - Make You Feel My Love

Taylor Swift - Lover

John Legend - All Of Me

Bruno Mars - Just the Way You Are

For a classical wedding, you can choose songs from:

Frank Sinatra - Fly Me To The Moon

Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling in Love

Stevie Wonder - For Once In My Life

Elton John - Your Song

  • Another important question is if you would like more fun and rhythmical songs or you prefer romantic and slow songs.

Fun and rhythmical songs:

Ray LaMontagne - You are the Best Thing

Bruno Mars - Marry You

Grover Washington - Just The Two of Us

Romantic songs:

Brad Paisley - Then

Van Morrison - Crazy Love

Ed Sheeran - Kiss Me

Acoustic romantic songs:

Una Healy - Stay my love

Kina Grannis - Can't help falling in love

  • Maybe you are a fan of Disney and musicals? Here are songs for you:

Aladdin - A whole new world

Elton John - Can you feel the love tonight

The Greatest Showman - A million dreams

4. Pick a genre.

Country:

Brett Young - Change Your Name

Chris Lane - Big, Big Plans

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour

Rock:

Queen - You're My Best Friend

Joe Cocker - You Are So Beautiful

Coldplay - A Sky Full of Stars

Soul and R&B:

Alicia Keys ft. Usher - If I Ain't Got You

Ben E. King - Stand by Me

Stevie Wonder - As

Hip-hop:

Kendrick Lamar, Zacari - LOVE

Beyoncé ft. Jay Z - Crazy in love

Jennifer Lopez ft. Ja Rule - I’m real

Pop:

Ed Sheeran - Perfect

Russell Dickerson - Yours

Dan + Shay - From The Ground Up

5. Choose a song with a beat you can follow.

If you already narrowed your list and you have just a few songs in mind, try all of them. Just start to dance and you will feel which one has a rhythm you can hear and follow.

Some couples have their favorite artist or band. You can start there. Choose a few singers and narrow your list. Browse their albums and songs. Think about the melody. Slow songs might be boring for the guests, and hard to follow the beat. Fast songs can’t be impossible to dance on in a wedding dress and shoes. BTW. I suggest trying to dance in your shoes weeks before your wedding.

If you went through all these steps, and you still can’t choose your song, dance style or just simply can’t feel the rhythm, I suggest you find a local dance teacher, dance school, and ask for help. Dancing might be way out of your comfort zone. Now imagine being the only couple on the dance floor and people who are important to you are all looking at you. A professional can help you with basic tips, like how to become a better leader and follower on the dance floor. How to hear and feel the music. How to get more confident dancing in front of a crowd. Trust me, your first dance will remember most of your guests for a long time, I mean loooooong time… You want to surprise them with a memorable First Dance...
